Does The Location Make A Difference?

When capturing images of the ocean, I have two locations that I love to visit: Devil’s Point, also known as Firestone Bay, and Wembury Beach, both located in or near Plymouth, Devon.

The type of images I capture is influenced by my connection to each location. From when I was eight years old, my parents and I frequented Devil’s Point, a place they cherished. We would enjoy ice cream with clotted cream and take leisurely walks, admiring the stunning views and occasionally watching the Brittany Ferry arriving or departing from the docks. My father taught me to swim in the outdoor pool at this site, and in later years, my own children enjoyed swimming there as well. As such, this location holds significant sentimental value for me, filled with cherished memories of my parents and my children.

I believe this sentiment is evident in the photographs I have taken of this area, as they possess a nostalgic quality and each one captures the beauty of the landscape.

Wembury Beach, in contrast, does not evoke the same emotional connection for me. When I am at this location, I experience a profound sense of freedom and a connection with nature. With my eyes closed, I can immerse myself in the sound of the waves crashing against the shore, complemented by the scent of seaweed. This experience allows me to feel a deep engagement with the natural elements around me. The intensity of the waves striking the sand is palpable, highlighting their relentless pursuit of the shoreline. In these moments, I feel a sense of empowerment.

The themes of strength and the untamed beauty of the sea are prominently reflected in my photographs of Wembury. My fascination with the sea—its power and ever-changing form—serves as the focal point for a photoshoot in this area which is very different from my perspective at Devil’s Point.

The location we select provides us with a unique perspective, aiding in the development of the narrative for our body of work and facilitating a connection to our emotions, which we can subsequently incorporate into the images.
